Teen Counseling
Teen counseling is an area in which I excel as a therapist. Teens find me to be fun and exciting, yet challenging.
For their first session, teens often come in grumpy, stubborn, or not wanting to talk, but then they can’t wait to make their next appointment.
Adolescence is a difficult time for most of us. The pressures of transitioning from childhood to adulthood are often a rocky road. As a parent, you want to help your teen through this time, but you are often too “close” to your child to either evaluate his/her struggles or to be heard by your teen.
I have had extensive experience helping teens work with their parents in a more cooperative manner. In a counseling setting, teens appreciate having a safe place to share their feelings and struggles, and their parents enjoy having another person to help support their efforts.
Suppose your teen is experiencing any of the following issues. In that case, it may be time to see a professional for help: depression, low self-esteem, being bullied or being a bully at school, excessive anger, anxiety, not getting along with others, etc.
I am here not to replace you as a parent, but to help give you and your teen new ideas for surviving adolescence. Good problem-solving involves both the parent and the teen willing to make changes. Often parents will get farther by changing their parenting style than simply expecting their teen to change their behavior. Parents underestimate their influence on the family dynamics and conflict resolution in the home.
Child Counseling
“My child clients enjoy their counseling sessions with me and usually can’t wait for their next appointment.” Dr. Carole
Child therapy is counseling that is age-appropriate for the developmental stage of the child or adolescent.
A child’s counseling session can look very different from an adult’s. For example, I often use “play therapy” to work through a child’s feelings and experiences. It is common to play with toys, draw pictures, and use puppets during a counseling session with a child.
If your child is just entering the teen years, then journaling, playing board games or drawing can be forms of age-appropriate counseling techniques. Sometimes children in their early teens are just ready to unload and work through their issues.
As a skilled therapist, I work to reach your child on his or her developmental and emotional level. I engage your child in an emotionally safe manner and involve the parent(s) whenever possible.
Children have ways of telling us that they need therapy: their school performance or behavior may be problematic; they may be showing signs of depression, fear, or having trouble sharing their feelings with the adults who care for them.
I have worked many years with children from age 5 and up. I know the unique challenges that children have with expressing their emotions. I work with the adults who care for these children, to give both the child and the caregivers tools to overcome the issues at hand.
Domestic Violence Counseling
I provide domestic violence/abuse counseling for victims only.
Domestic violence counseling focuses on the unique needs of people who have been traumatized by being in an abusive relationship with a close relative or partner.
Domestic violence comes in many forms, perhaps you were physically abused with hitting, choking, or stabbing. Or, you were verbally abused with name calling or threats to you or your children’s well-being. Other common forms of abuse are being financially controlled, stalked, or harassed by your partner or relative with whom you share a residence.
If you have witnessed or experienced domestic violence, you may need to address the trauma you have lived through. Recovery is essential to your understanding that you were not responsible for your abuse. Therapy can also help you learn whom to trust when making future relationships.
You need domestic violence counseling when you feel you can no longer make it through everyday activities without being bothered, anxious, or depressed by remembering traumatic events. If you have recently reported the incident and your abuser is working his/her way through the litigation process, you need help and support during this difficult time.
You also need to see a professional if you are parenting a child who has witnessed or experienced domestic violence. As a professional, I can help you to make positive parenting decisions so that your child can experience as normal of a childhood as possible.
Crime Victim Counseling
If you are a crime victim, I believe I can make a difference in your life. Because my office is conveniently located at Hampden and Wadsworth, I counsel crime victims from a broad area of town.
I provide crime victim counseling for children, teens, and adults who have been victimized within Jefferson, Denver, Adams, Broomfield, and Arapahoe counties and who have had the crime reported to the appropriate police department.
I have a great deal of experience providing counseling for sexual assault, domestic violence, shootings, and other crimes.
If you would like to utilize my therapy services and if the crime was not in the county mentioned above, then I can contact the appropriate victim compensation board to be placed on their approved list of therapists.
I provide crime-related counseling for victims only. I excel in providing crime victim therapy for children and teens and also counsel many adult victims.
FOR VICTIMS
If you or a family member is a victim of a crime, if you reported the crime to the appropriate local police department, and if you are working through a victim advocate you may be eligible for victim assistance related to counseling. I generally do the work for you to process paperwork that will be used to determine if you are eligible to receive any financial assistance for counseling.
Your victim advocate may have given you or will give you a short referral list of counselors to consider for therapy. My name may or may not be on that list, but you are allowed to have any approved therapist of your choice. I am approved by the Jefferson, Denver, Adams/Broomfield, and Arapahoe County victim compensation boards to provide my counseling services to crime victims.
If seeking counseling is unfamiliar territory for you, relax! I am friendly and can explain the process to you and answer your questions. Feel free to give me a call or send me an email.
FOR VICTIM ADVOCATES
I have been providing general therapy services for the community at large and victim counseling for crime victims during the past 10 years.
I also provide public speaking and can speak to your advocate group concerning interesting and educational issues related to crime victim counseling. If you are looking for a public speaker for your next advocate group meeting feel free to contact me. I offer this type of public speaking as a free service.
For a portion of my practice, I specialize in providing crime victim counseling for teens and children involved in sexual assault, domestic violence, shootings, and other crimes. I also provide crime victim counseling for adult women and men (again victims only).
As a victim advocate, you may find that your department struggles to find approved therapists who counsel children, teens, and families. If you desire, you may refer me directly to a client. Also, feel free to include me on your general referral list and inform other advocates you work with of my services.
